CHARLOTTE BLOOMBERG graduated from high school at the age of 16 and completed her undergraduate studies at New York University. Both she and her husband, William Bloomberg, were employed by dairy companies in the northeast. Mrs. Bloomberg was active in cultural and civic life in Medford, Massachusetts, and metropolitan Boston. She died in 2011 at the age of 102.
YITZHAK Y. MELAMED is the Charlotte Bloomberg Professor of Philosophy at Johns Hopkins University. He has master’s degrees in philosophy and the history of science and logic from Tel Aviv University, and a doctoral degree in philosophy from Yale University. He has been awarded several honors including the Fulbright, Mellon, and American Academy for Jewish Research Fellowships. He is also the recipient of the ACLS Burkhardt, NEH, and Humboldt fellowships for his forthcoming book on Spinoza and German idealism. Dr. Melamed works at the intersection of philosophy (primarily metaphysics), Jewish and religious studies, the history of science, and the humanities. He studies past philosophers and less familiar theoretical analyses. Dr. Melamed’s first book – Spinoza’s Metaphysics: Substance and Thought (Oxford University Press, 2013) – offered a new and systematic interpretation of the core of Spinoza’s metaphysics. His second – Spinoza’s Labyrinths (Oxford University Press), and third – Spinoza: An Introduction (Shazar Press, in Hebrew)- are in press, and he is currently working on the completion of two other book projects — on Spinoza and German Idealism, and on Spinoza’s Anti-Humanism. Dr. Melamed has also published numerous shorter studies on medieval, early modern philosophy, and German idealism and is currently working on issues in contemporary metaphysics
