Jeffrey P. Michael

JEFFREY P. MICHAEL, EdD, is the current Leon S. Robertson Faculty Development Chair in Injury Prevention. Dr. Michael has been a Visiting Scholar in the Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy since November 2018. He has worked with the Center to establish a new international public health research and training hub to develop and disseminate policy guidance to assist communities in adopting mobility innovations that can improve public health. The Johns Hopkins New Mobility Initiative engages experts from across the University in examining the adoption of new mobility technologies such as rideshare, scooters, electric bicycles and driverless vehicles. The Initiative will also facilitate implementation of new transportation governance methods such as the Safe System Approach that promise substantial reductions in death and injury on our roads. The Initiative will serve a critical role as a neutral and independent source of policy guidance to assist communities in applying new tools to improve safety and reduce mobility inequities.

Dr. Michael previously served as the Associate Administrator for Research and Program Development for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) within the U.S. Department of Transportation. As a member of the Federal Senior Executive Service, he was responsible for research, development, and evaluation of programs to improve the safety of the full range of road users.

After receiving a Doctor of Education degree from West Virginia University in 1988, Dr. Michael pursued a 30-year career at NHTSA which included service as Chief of the Emergency Medical Services Division, and Director of the Office of Impaired Driving and Occupant Protection. In 2010, Dr. Michael received Presidential Rank for exemplary performance in public service.
