Richard E. McCarty

RICHARD E. McCARTY, A&S 1960, 1964 (PhD), Dean Emeritus of the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, is the William D. Gill Professor of Biology. After 24 years on the faculty of Cornell University, he returned to Hopkins in 1990 to chair the Department of Biology. The American Society of Plant Physiologists awarded Dr. McCarty its Charles F. Kettering Award in 1994, calling him “a central figure” since the l960s in advancing the understanding of photosynthesis and photosynthetic energy conversion. He has written more than 120 scholarly articles and has served as associate editor of Plant Physiology and on the editorial boards of four other professional journals.
