Zaver M. Bhujwalla

ZAVER M. BHUJWALLA, MSc, PhD is the second recipient of the William R. Brody Professorship in the Russell H. Morgan Department of Radiology and Radiological Science at Johns Hopkins Medicine. She serves as the Vice-Chair of Research and is the inaugural Director of the Division of Cancer Imaging Research in the Department of Radiology.

Dr. Bhujwalla also co-directs the Cancer Molecular and Functional Imaging Program in the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Dr. Bhujwalla joined the Department of Radiology as a postdoctoral fellow in 1989, immediately after completing her PhD from the University of London. She was promoted to Professor in 2002. Dr. Bhujwalla holds secondary appointments in Oncology, and Radiation Oncology and Molecular Radiation Sciences.

A visionary with an outstanding track record of innovation and excellence in molecular and functional imaging of cancer, Dr. Bhujwalla is widely acknowledged as a leader in her field. In 2017, she was awarded the Gold Medal Award by the World Molecular Imaging Society for her outstanding contributions to the field of molecular imaging. As principal investigator, Dr. Bhujwalla directed and held a National Cancer Institute P50 center grant (JHU ICMIC) from 2003 to 2016. Under her leadership, Johns Hopkins established the MRB Molecular Imaging Service Center for members of the School of Medicine. Dr. Bhujwalla is the recipient of an NCI Outstanding Investigator Award (R35) since 2017.

Dr. Bhujwalla is currently associated with the editorial boards of Molecular Imaging, NMR in Biomedicine, Cancer Biology and Therapy, and Tomography. She serves as the specialty chief editor for Cancer Imaging and Diagnosis, Frontiers in Oncology. Dr. Bhujwalla is a Fellow of the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, and the World Molecular Imaging Society. Dr. Bhujwalla served as the President of the World Molecular Imaging Society from 2012 to 2013. She is a distinguished investigator of the Academy of Radiology Research.

Dr. Bhujwalla has mentored more than 20 postdoctoral fellows, many of whom have become well known leaders at Johns Hopkins and at other institutions across the United States and abroad. She has served as Chair of the Career Development Advisory Committee in the Department of Radiology since 2011.
