Salisbury Family Professorship in Neurosurgery

CHARLES H. and EDITH G., Bus 1973, SALISBURY have had many successes, both personally and professionally.

After serving for five years in the military, attaining the rank of captain with the Air Force, Charles worked for Merrill Lynch Pierce Fenner & Smith. In 1970, he joined T. Rowe Price, where he worked until 1993. There, Charles was a member of the board of directors and served on the board for Rowe Price-Fleming International, rising to president and chief investment officer of the T. Rowe Price Trust Company. He earned his MBA with honors in finance from Loyola in 1973 and completed Stanford’s Executive Program in 1983. Following his time at T. Rowe Price, Charles served as executive vice president for United Asset Management Corporation in addition to holding a position on the company’s management committee. In 1998, he started Salisbury Broadcasting Corporation.

Additionally, Charles was the chairman of the board of Hobart and William Smith Colleges and a member of the board for 13 years as an honorary trustee. He also serves, or has served, on the boards of the Maryland Institute College of Art; Cristo Rey Jesuit High School-Baltimore; Guadalupe Center of Immokalee in Naples, Florida; CeraTech, Inc.; and Indium Corporation of America.

Edith graduated from the Bryn Mawr School and earned her degree from The Johns Hopkins University in 1973. In between attending classes, she worked for The James Rouse Company. Edith was very involved in the Baltimore community as a member of the Women’s Committee of the Walters Art Museum and served on both The Roland Park Country School and The Oldfields School boards. She is also a member of The League Club in Naples, Florida, in addition to her role as president of the Salisbury Family Foundation.

Charlie Salisbury never forgot how he witnessed firsthand the care and the skills of the Neurosurgery Department when Edith suffered a major cerebral hemorrhage. “I made a promise to myself to do something significant,” said Salisbury. Over the years, the family had made gifts to support Dr. Rigamonti’s innovative research but wanted to do more. In 2007, the Salisbury family decided to make a commitment to establish the Salisbury Family Professorship in Neurosurgery with Dr. Rigamonti named as the inaugural recipient.

The Salisburys’ commitment to Johns Hopkins and their ties to the area remain strong. He is a former member of The Johns Hopkins Hospital Board of Trustees, and a member of the board of the Johns Hopkins Hospital Endowment Fund. Edith is also strongly committed to Johns Hopkins Medicine and served as a member of the Johns Hopkins Hospital Women’s Board for over 25 years. Through their commitment of time, energy, and philanthropy, Charles and Edith help to maintain Johns Hopkins Medicine’s status as an international leader in teaching, research and patient care.
