Jacob L. Hain Chair in Arts and Sciences

HainJacobJACOB L. HAIN, A&S 1923, a university trustee, was an investment banker who organized the Penn Square Mutual Fund located in Reading, Pennsylvania. The firm dealt primarily with investments in railroads, airlines, and nonferrous metals. In addition to endowing this professorship, Mr. Hain also made possible the acquisition of the Steinwald Alumni House, named in honor of his close friend Osmar Steinwald, A&S 1928, who was Hopkins’ first director of alumni relations.

Mr. Hain was a tireless promoter of Hopkins’ annual Roll Call (now called Annual Giving) from the early 1950s until his death in 1972. He twice served as chairman of the Roll Call and was also a great supporter of theĀ Johns Hopkins Magazine, in which his long series of back-cover ads often included a memorable brain teaser.

“My father believed that supporting the dissemination of knowledge and information was a duty every man had to his family, to society, and to the future.”

Andrew M. Hain
