GildersleeveBasilBASIL LANNEAU GILDERSLEEVE, Hopkins’ first professor of Greek–and the first faculty member appointed at the newly formed university–was twice president of the American Philological Association and founder of The American Journal of Philology, which he edited for 40 years.
