The Howard W. Jones, Jr., M.D. and Georgeanna Seegar Jones, M.D. Professorship

 

HOWARD W. JONES JR, MD graduated from Amherst College in 1931 and received his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1935. His postgraduate training was in gynecology and general surgery, and he served as chief resident in general surgery in 1940 at Church Hospital in Baltimore. Upon completion of his residency, Dr. Jones married Dr. Georgeanna Seegar.

GEORGEANNA SEEGAR JONES, MD graduated from Goucher College in 1932 and received her medical degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1936. In 1939, Dr. Seegar Jones established the first Division of Reproductive Endocrinology in the United States at Johns Hopkins. She became the first full-time gynecological endocrinologist at a medical school in this country.

Upon returning from World War II, Dr. Howard Jones took a second residency in the Department of Gynecology at Johns Hopkins. One of the foremost pelvic surgeons of his generation, Dr. Jones established an international reputation in reparative and reconstructive surgery of the female genital tract. His skill in surgery and Dr. Seegar Jones’ expertise in endocrinology made them a highly respected, well-rounded team. From their first contact with Johns Hopkins as medical students through their departure in 1978—a span of almost 50 years— the Joneses wrote over 400 peer-reviewed papers, either individually or as joint authors. Drs. Howard and Georgeanna Jones moved to Norfolk in 1978 and created the Jones Institute of Reproductive Medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School, where the first IVF baby in the United States was born. They are recognized as pioneers in the field of in vitro fertilization in the United States. Dr. Seegar Jones passed away in 2005 at the age of 93.  Dr. Jones passed away in 2015 at the age of 104.
