Christian A. Herter Professorship in American Foreign Policy

HerterChristianCHRISTIAN ARCHIBALD HERTER, United States secretary of state from 1959 to 1961, was one of the founders of SAIS. During his long and distinguished public career, he was a diplomat, a congressman, and governor of Massachusetts. He was highly praised by President Dwight Eisenhower, who said, “When you look at him, you know you are looking at an honest man.” A university trustee and SAIS Advisory Council member, he served as special advisor on international affairs to the university in the 1960s. Secretary Herter, who died in 1966, received an honorary doctor of laws degree from Hopkins in 1961.
