Yasuhiro Nakasone Chair in Japanese Studies
YASUHIRO NAKASONE, prime minister of Japan from 1982 to 1987, supported the renewal of the United States-Japan Security Treaty and worked closely with President Ronald Reagan to strengthen United States/Japan relations. The prime minister spoke at the 1983 SAIS commencement and the following year was awarded an honorary Hopkins doctorate at a university convocation in Tokyo–the first time the university had ever conducted a convocation off campus.
