GriswoldBHowellB. HOWELL GRISWOLD JR., A&S 1894, senior partner of Alex. Brown and Sons, was instrumental in the establishment of the university’s first School of Engineering, founded in 1913. A member of the first Hopkins Alumni Council, formed in 1909, he was appointed a university trustee two years later, serving for more than three decades.

Two subsequent generations of Griswolds have served as university trustees: his son, Benjamin Howell Griswold III, and his grandson, Benjamin Howell Griswold IV. The Griswolds, who are related to the founder of the investment firm now called Deutsche Bank USA, are also collateral descendants of Johns Hopkins.
