Benjamin H. Griswold III Chair in Public Policy

Established in 1986 by Alex. Brown & Sons in honor of Benjamin H. Griswold III

GriswoldBenjaminBENJAMIN H. GRISWOLD III, a university trustee from 1951 to 1980 and thereafter trustee emeritus, was senior partner of the Baltimore investment firm of Alex. Brown & Sons, whose partners endowed this chair in his honor to recognize his leadership and longtime generosity at Johns Hopkins. Mr. Griswold served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during World War II, for which he earned British, French, and American medals recognizing his participation in the North African invasion. He was a director of Fidelity & Deposit Company of Maryland, Black & Decker, the A.S. Abell Company, and many other firms in the region. Mr. Griswold died on January 16, 2006.

LINGXIN HAO, Ph.D., the Benjamin H. Griswold III Professor of Public Policy, is a sociologist whose research examines the causes and mechanisms of inequality in child development, education, income, consumption, wealth, and health among individuals and families in the United States and China. Her research involves multi-disciplinary collaborations, applies advanced quantitative and computational methods to large-scale data, and produces implications for policy. She has been recognized as a Russell Sage Foundation Residential Fellow and a Spencer Foundation Residential Fellow. Dr. Hao has published four books and more than 50 scholarly articles. She has received multiple grants from NIH and NSF in support of her research. Dr. Hao earned her doctorate in sociology from the University of Chicago in 1990 and joined the Hopkins faculty in 1996.
