GREGG L. SEMENZA, MD, PhD, the C. Michael Armstrong Professor of Medicine, is director of the Vascular Program in Hopkins’ Institute for Cell Engineering and a member of the McKusick-Nathans Institute of Genetic Medicine. He is professor in the departments of Pediatrics, Medicine, Oncology, Radiation Oncology, and Biological Chemistry. He is also affiliated with Hopkins’ Institute for NanoBioTechnology. Dr. Semenza is a founding fellow of the American College of Medical Genetics and was elected to the Association of American Physicians and the National Academy of Sciences in 2008. He first came to Hopkins as a postdoctoral fellow in 1986 and joined the Hopkins faculty in 1990. His research interests include molecular mechanisms of oxygen homeostasis, gene and stem cell therapy for ischemic cardiovascular disease, exploring the role of HIF-1 in cancer, and protection of the heart against ischemia-reperfusion injury.
