Curtis L. Meinert Professorship in Clinical Trials

MeinertCurtisCURTIS L. MEINERT, PhD, is a professor of epidemiology and founding director of the Center for Clinical Trials at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The Center for Clinical Trials, a joint initiative of the Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, supports the conduct of clinical trials for investigators throughout the Johns Hopkins medical institutions. Its faculty, based in many departments, collectively works to advance the methodology and conduct of clinical trials. Under his leadership, the center has become a model venue for carrying out clinical trials and for improving the methodology of trials. Dr. Meinert also holds a joint appointment in the Department of Biostatistics. His current research interests involve working on a paper concerning shutdowns of IRBs by OHRP and its predecessor organization, OPRR.

TonasciaJamesJAMES TONASCIA, PhD, the inaugural Curtis L. Meinert Professor of Clinical Trials, is a professor of biostatistics and holds a joint appointment in the Department of Epidemiology. Dr. Tonascia joined the Biostatistics Department faculty in 1970 and was promoted to professor in 1981. He has been teaching since he joined the faculty and has developed seven new biostatistics courses and has taught four other courses in either the Biostatistics or Epidemiology departments. He has was given the Ernest Lyman Stebbins Medal for contributions to the School of Public Health in 1981 and is a four-time recipient of the Golden Apple Award for excellence in teaching. Since 1981, Dr. Tonascia has had a productive collaboration with Dr. Meinert on the design, analysis, and, most especially, conduct of many multicenter randomized clinical trials. Currently, Dr. Tonascia teaches courses in statistical methods and experimental design and directs several data coordinating centers for clinical research networks.
