DOROTHY EDWARDS, MD studied at the Johns Hopkins Medical School from 1917—two years before American women won the right to vote—until 1922. At a time when it was very unusual for a woman to pursue higher education, she attended some of the best schools in the world, including Northwestern, Cornell, as well as universities in Vienna and Edinburgh. She went on to become a successful gynecologist in Chicago. Dr. Edwards died in 1984.
ANDREW SATIN, MD, the Dr. Dorothy Edwards Professor of Gynecology and Obstetrics, is the Director of the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics and Johns Hopkins Obstetrician-in-Chief. Previously, Dr. Satin served at Johns Hopkins Bayview as Director of Gynecology and Obstetrics and Chair of the Medical Board.
Dr. Satin has earned the respect of his colleagues and students alike. In 2008, he received the School of Medicine’s John G. Griffith Award for innovation and excellence in education in gynecology and obstetrics, and in 2012, he was awarded the Resident Teaching Award. He chairs the Johns Hopkins Women’s Health in the National Capital Region Strategic Planning Group, where he has grown relationships with private physicians at Suburban and Sibley Memorial hospitals and advanced Johns Hopkins programs in the Washington, DC, area.
Dr. Satin is a retired U.S. Air Force colonel and the recipient of numerous military service and achievement medals. He earned his medical degree at the F. Edward Hébert School of Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, and completed a fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.
Before joining Johns Hopkins, Dr. Satin was a professor and chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at his medical school alma mater, where he received multiple Outstanding Clinical Teacher awards and other accolades. He was also an attending physician at both the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda and Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC.
Dr. Satin holds several national leadership positions, including Director of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine. He has served as Chair of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists’ committees on Practice Bulletins and Clinical Document Review. He has published many articles in obstetrics and maternal-fetal medicine journals and written numerous textbook chapters. His research interests include exercise in pregnancy, an interest that he says grew out of his work with women in the military and athletes who wanted to stay physically fit during their pregnancies. Other research areas of interest to him include labor stimulation and simulation, in which he has led countless residents through simulation laboratories and directed simulation courses for the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine.
