IRENE POLLIN has been a pioneer in many areas of women’s health. She was motivated to start Sister to Sister: The Women’s Heart Health Foundation in 2000 to get the word out to women — especially to working women who have limited time to take care of themselves — that cardiac screenings are a key factor in heart disease prevention.
A psychotherapist with a Master of Social Work degree from Catholic University and an Honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Howard University, Irene is the author of two books, Medical Crisis Counseling and Taking Charge: Overcoming the Challenges of Long-Term Illness, and has written many articles on coping with chronic illness.
Mrs. Pollin has received numerous health care awards and is a member of the Harvard School of Public Health Nutrition Round Table, the Department of Health and Human Services Office on Women’s Health Heart Attack Campaign Expert Panel, American Women for International Understanding, and Brigham and Women’s Hospital President’s Advisory Council.

ROGER S. BLUMENTHAL, A&S 1981, the inaugural Kenneth Jay Pollin Professor of Cardiology, is a professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Dr. Blumenthal graduated with honors from the Landon School in Bethesda and The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. He received his medical degree from Cornell Medical College, where he was awarded the Weiss Prize for Excellence in Clinical Medicine. He did his internal medicine and cardiology fellowship training at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.
Dr. Blumenthal’s principal clinical and research interests involve the optimal management of atherosclerotic vascular disease and the development of new strategies to optimize the management of cardiovascular disease risk factors. Dr. Blumenthal was the principal developer of the Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease, and is an official national spokesperson for the American Heart Association (AHA). An experienced writer, Dr. Blumenthal is on the editorial board of Cardiology Today, American Heart Journal, and Clinical Cardiology. He has co-written more than 400 articles dealing with many aspects of coronary artery disease and atherosclerosis management. He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the AHA’s Epidemiology and Prevention Council. He was editor-in-chief of the 2011 textbook Preventive Cardiology – A Companion to Braunwald’s Heart Disease and for many years he has been the medical editor of the annual Johns Hopkins White Paper on Prevention of Heart Attacks.
In 2010 he was presented with the David Levine Award for Excellence in Mentoring of postdoctoral fellows, residents, and junior faculty in the Johns Hopkins Department of Medicine. Currently, he is president of the Greater Maryland Chapter of the AHA.
