Rainey Professorship in Pediatric Hematology

School of Medicine

Established in 1992 with a gift made in 1984 by John Faulkner Rainey and his wife, Caroline Stringer Rainey

RaineyJohnWhen his grandson was diagnosed with leukemia, JOHN F. RAINEY, Med 1933, called Johns Hopkins and was assured that the boy was getting proper care. Indeed, the grandson recovered, and Dr. and Mrs. Rainey developed a lasting friendship with Hopkins pediatric hematologist William H. Zinkham, the first to hold this professorship. The Raineys’ 1984 gift to create this chair was invested by the university and in 1992 fully funded the establishment of the Rainey Professorship. Dr. Rainey, who died in 1996 at the age of 89, had been in private practice since 1937, primarily in Anderson, South Carolina, where he served as chief of staff of the Anderson Memorial Hospital and president of the Anderson County Medical Society.

Held by James F. Casella
